How Big Is Your Pool?


Chemical, pump and filter requirements are normally measured according to the capacity of your pool. To calculate the volume of your pool in litres the following method can be used:

Leafy Pools


Falling leaves will always prove a problem for pools. These leaves can soak up your chlorine, provide a food source for algae and can leave unsightly stains on the bottom of your pool.

The unique Poolskim can provide a solution to this by skimming the surface of your pool and removing all floating debris such as leaves, grass clippings and insects. The Poolskim removes leaves from your pool before they get waterlogged and sink to the bottom. This can also be a great help to automatic cleaners for keeping your pool perfectly clean all year round. 

Questa or Arneson canisters are also a great helping hand for collecting leaves. Canisters will connect to the hose of your automatic cleaner and catch the leaves as they are sucked up. This allows much greater pick up of leaves as your skimmer basket does not become clogged and your cleaner can work more effectively for longer.

Balancing Your Pool

To get the best out of your pool it is necessary to monitor the balance of your water. Improper levels of pH and other minerals can prevent pool treatments from doing their job, not to mention damaging your pool walls and equipment with stains, scale and corrosion. Things such as pH, Total alkalinity, Calcium hardness and stabiliser are the important elements of water balance. Maintaining an ideal range of these items will maximise your comfort in the water and extend the life of your pool structure and equipment.

pH: A low pH causes chlorine to be used up quickly and leads to corrosion. A high pH slows the effectiveness of your sanitiser therefore leading to cloudiness and scale formation. Use Acid to decrease your pH, a low pH will normally indicate a low Total Alkalinity level.

Total Alkalinity: This affects and controls pH. If total alkalinity is too high pH will be hard to adjust. If the level is too low pH will be unstable and difficult to maintain. This "pH bounce" can cause corrosion to your walls and lead to cracking. Total Alkalinity levels can be corrected through the use of Balance Pak 100.

Calcium Hardness: Your water requires a certain amount of calcium to be dissolved in it. The water will not tolerate levels too high or too low. High levels can cause scale and cloudy water as the calcium will not dissolve in the water and will therefore leave deposits and cause staining. High calcium levels are the result of excessive use of the cheaper calcium based chlorines. When the levels are too low the water will draw calcium from your walls and equipment causing harm to both. Calcium levels can be increased by using Balance Pak 300. To lower calcium the water will need to be refreshed, however adding a product such as Scale Inhibitorcan reduce the staining effects of high calcium.

Stabiliser: A chemical which prevents loss of chlorine from the suns rays.

3 Step Maintenance Plan


Once your water is balanced you can keep it in perfect, sparkling condition by following 3 basic steps.


STEP 1: SANITISE: to continuously kill bacteria we recommend the use of a stabilised concentrated chlorine stick such as Smart Sticks. While being stabilised this chlorine has the added benefit of inbuilt clarifiers to keep your pool sparkling. This type of chlorine can be placed in your pools skimmer basket and will dissolve easily (no need to dilute in a bucket of water first). The inbuilt stabiliser means the chlorine will stay in your water longer enabling you to use less chlorine so sanitiser costs are lower. These sticks are added directly to your skimmer box and are slow disolving so you only need 1-2 a week!

STEP 2: REMOVE WASTES: When wastes from things such as cosmetics, perspiration, body oils and sunblock build up in your pool the effectiveness of chlorine is reduced. As these wastes dissolve in the water the filter is unable to remove them. The nitrogen that is in these wastes then attaches itself to your chlorine to form what is known as "chloramines". These chloramines are ineffective as a sanitiser and are the cause of odour and irritation. They can also cause your pool water to have a dull look. These wastes need to be burnt out of the water through the use of an oxidiser such as Lite. This treatment should be used at least once a fortnight (during summer).

STEP 3: PREVENT ALGAE: By the time you can actually see algae there can be up to 30 million spores in 1 ounce of water! To prevent these spores from becoming visible and taking over your pool a maintenance dose of algaecide such as BackUp II should be used in your pool. Once algae is visible it will continue to multiply rapidly and is time consuming and costly to remove ... not to mention unsightly. Preventing algae is a much more cost effective way of treating your pool and will ensure it is always ready to swim in.

 

Pool & Chemicals - Safety Tips
  1. Never mix chemicals together. Chemical reactions can take place resulting in possible fires or explosion. Always add chemicals to your pool separately. 
  2. Do not overdose your pool. Only add the required amounts to your pool as specified by the label or your dealer. Adding more will not benefit your pool.
  3. Never add water to chemicals. Always add the chemicals into the pool water. Do not pour water on top of chemicals in their containers. If mixing in a bucket always fill the bucket with water first before adding any product. 
  4. Avoid inhaling fumes. When opening chemical containers turn your head to the side to avoid the fumes and keep the product away from your eyes, nose or mouth.
  5. No smoking. Never smoke while in close range of your chemicals. Some of the fumes can be highly flammable, and a lit cigarette or match can ignite chlorines.
  6. Store products safely. Store them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area and away from other household chemicals. Be sure to keep acid at least 3 metres away from all chlorines.

Pump Problem Solving


NOISY PUMP?
The main cause of a noisy pump is in the bearings and seals. The seals may have leaked allowing water to get to the bearings. This water causes the bearings to loose their lubrication and become dry. It is this dryness that causes the noise. Bearings and seals are easily repaired by our technicians here at the shop.

NO SUCTION? Often caused by air getting into your filtration system. Common points where this can happen are at the pump lid or the o-ring under the pump lid. Air can also enter through the pipes so there could be a hole in the piping between the skimmer box and the pump. No suction can also be attributed to air getting in through the seals in the pump or that there is not enough water in the pool. Another common cause is a blockage in your pipes or pump. These problems can be detected and fixed by our technicians on site.

 

Loosing Water?


Water can be lost from your pool at many different points:
 

  1. Hydrostatic valve: Water can leak out of the seals in your hydrostatic valve at the bottom of the pool. 
  2. Pump: The pump could be leaking from either the seals or the pump body. If this is the case you will need to have the pump serviced by our technicians. 
  3. Filter: Look for leaks around the multiport valve or coming out of the backwash line. Often this leak can be fixed by simply changing the spider gasket in the valve. Our service representatives are available to repair any leaks or replace the spider gasket. 
  4. Pipes: Leaks can occur through holes in the pressure side of your piping. That is from your pump through the filter and back to the pool. 
  5. Crack in pool: Check the walls of your pool for cracks or leaks.
