The entire family just spent an amazing day in the swimming pool, playing some great pool games but what do you do when your child starts complaining about burning eyes? And most importantly, how do you avoid it? In this article we have provided some of the reasons why your eyes may be burning, how to make it stop and how to avoid it in the future.
The first step in this case is to take care of your child’s eyes. To do so take him or her to the closest sink and wash out the eyes with clear and lukewarm water during a minimum 2 minutes, one eye after the other. Do not use any product at this stage. After this, dry the eyes with a clean towel. If you have eye drops at home, you could use them now but do not use them too often. If the burning is too painful or if it lasts long after being in the pool, take your child to the doctor to avoid any complications and ask him or her to keep his/her eyes closed as much as possible.
Why does this happen? Eye irritation can appear if the pool is not regularly cleaned and maintained, if the ventilation is not correct in case of an indoor pool or because of chemical imbalance.
Basically, you can face four chemical issues:
When you have an indoor pool, make sure that you are aware of the optimum ventilation to ensure that you have a good air quality in the pool area. If the quality of air is low this can enhance the production of chloramines.
To identify the cause of the eye irritation, you can proceed by testing the water yourself or by bringing a water sample to our shop for a free water testing.
Keeping the level of chlorine in your pool right is one of the most important things to do, if the level is much too low, you can use a super chlorination product. Make sure that you do not swim in your pool before the right level is obtained. To avoid the development of chloramines, take a shower before swimming to minimize the chemical products on your body such as sun cream and perfume.
We recommend that you ask your kids to wear goggles when they go to the pool. Just to be sure.
